Avast has been around for over 30 years and claims to secure 435 million devices around the world with its award-winning security software for cyberspace. While the company’s free programs are limited in functionality the premium versions such as Avast Ultimate, are quite extensive. The suite includes antivirus software, VPN services, password managers and Cleanup tools to help users manage their passwords, keep their identity private online, and optimize their devices.
Avast Ultimate is a basic interface that clearly shows the tools it offers. Its malware engine performed well in independent lab tests that identified a variety of malware that are often able to bypass other security tools. Its web security is effective, catching a lot of sites that phish, and get past Chrome and Firefox’s default protections.
Other tools include a RAM boost, app lock, and a network scan that identifies weaknesses. Its ransomware shield prevents third-party software from changing the contents of your files until you pay a price. The program is available as mobile applications for Android as well as iOS. Apple’s restrictions have made the Android version more feature-rich, but both versions feature essential security features like malware scanning and web coverage.
The only drawback is the fact that Avast collects your personal information and transmits it to its analytics division, Jumpshot. This was discovered in a PCMag and Motherboard investigation in 2020.
