Black Shark 4 Gaming Phone Review: This Feels Like Cheating

Xiaomi’s gaming partner has told us about the autonomy of the Black Shark 4. Specifically, this new smartphone will have a total of 4,500mAh , a capacity perhaps somewhat reduced for a terminal of this type. The Black Shark 4 runs on Joy UI 12.5, which looked and felt a little close to stock Android with some gaming aesthetics intergrated into the design. It could be that it uses a split charging system similar to the Lenovo phone which charges from two ports simultaneously. All you have to do is wait for the background update process to finish.

The 48MP images never looked sharper than 12MP iPhone shots, even when cropped in. Taking photos with the full 48MP was also a slow experience which required switching to a different mode as well as taking longer to actually capture the image. Especially when it comes to first-person shooters and MOBAS, nothing has really come close to a mouse and keyboard in terms of fast and precise controls for me. While there are a growing amount of games and applications that support 144Hz, more graphically intensive ones still might not hit 144fps. Playing Genshin Impact, for example, with more demanding environments which had a lot going on, could easily dip the FPS to the low 40s and even 30s, with graphics set to maximum quality.

I’d be willing to overlook some of these shortcomings if there weren’t already other powerful phones on the market. Samsung’s latest Galaxy S22 lineup, for instance, packs a lot of power as well as a 240Hz touch sampling rate. That’s a fraction of the Black Shark 4 Pro’s 720Hz spec, but I’d argue that the tangible difference probably isn’t perceptible to most people. And, at this point, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 within the S22 series outpaces the Snapdragon 888 that’s in the 4 Pro. You can have most of the power that you need in a phone that looks far better than this one and works with many more US carriers. The Black Shark 4 Pro won’t work with LTE or 5G networks on most carriers — at least reliably. It’s compatible with a smattering of bands for AT&T and T-Mobile, but it’s not broad support in the slightest.

Warming is on the usual level for high-performance smartphones and should hardly cause any problems under everyday conditions. However, the image becomes a bit pixelated in only one lux of brightness, but colors and the image content can still be recognized in general. The images never wowed me, but they never disappointed me either.
